EcoBeautyScore x Pilario: Advancing Sustainability in the Cosmetics Sector

Personal care and cosmetics products have a significant impact on the environment. Every product on our shelves carries an environmental cost, whether through depletion of natural resources or the sheer amount of packaging that ends up as waste. As awareness grows, so does the expectation for companies to rethink how their products are made, used, and disposed of.  Simply meeting regulatory requirements is no longer enough; genuine, measurable sustainability has become a necessity.

The EcoBeautyScore (EBS) is the first industry-wide environmental scoring system that provides clear, credible, and comparable information about the environmental footprint of cosmetic and personal care products. Developed with input from more than 70 global cosmetics stakeholders, EBS helps brands understand and reduce their impact while giving consumers the information they need to make more informed choices.

Discover how Pilario worked with EcoBeautyScore to provide a platform to assess the environmental footprint and final score of cosmetic products.

One Tool, Many Advantages

Pilario’s intuitive software enables teams to easily calculate the environmental impact of their product. Our tool highlights key hotspots and makes it easy to compare alternative materials to reduce that impact. Once the analysis is complete, teams can export their results, simplifying regulatory compliance and enabling clear communication with stakeholders.

EcoBeautyScore

The introduction of the EcoBeautyScore brings a level of transparency, which allows shoppers to easily compare similar products and make decisions that align with their values. In turn, the impact score encourages brands to adopt more responsible practices to meet the expectations of environmentally conscious consumers.

Behind this initiative is the EBS consortium, a collective of key industry leaders committed to driving meaningful environmental progress. By coming together around a unified scoring system, the consortium demonstrates a strong commitment to making personal care products more sustainable and pushing the industry toward measurable change.

The EBS system is built on four core components:

- A common methodology based on LCA and grounded in the EU Product Environmental Footprint (PEF) method

- A common database of cosmetic ingredients and raw materials used in formulation and packaging to assess footprint

- A common scoring mechanism & harmonised consumer-facing layout

- A common tool, the EBS platform, for assessing the environmental footprint and score of cosmetic products

Pilario led the development of this final component - the EBS platform. This ensures brands have an intuitive, reliable tool to evaluate the sustainability of the products in their portfolios and identify opportunities for improvement.

Key components of Pilario’s platform

There’s a lot we could say about our LCA model, but here are three key takeaways we want to highlight:

Effortless to Use, Fully Automatable

Pilario puts efficiency and simplicity first: product data can be imported via intuitive excel or automated 100% through API integration for maximum convenience. The interface is user-friendly, allowing anyone, regardless of LCA expertise, to access reliable results by focusing only on the essential information. This means even non-technical users can generate credible, actionable analytics to accelerate sustainability action.

Built for EBS and PEF Methodologies

Our dedicated EcoBeautyScore tenants are purpose-built to implement the EBS methodology devised by Quantis and the EBS consortium, aligning 100% with personal care product categories and the official European PEF rules. Members accessing this tenant obtain accurate LCA results and EBS scores directly, tailored to each product segment, streamlining compliance and making environmental performance transparent and comparable.

Meanwhile, Pilario’s wider platform serves other clients and sectors with flexible LCA solutions beyond EBS, ensuring broad applicability while maintaining specialist support within the dedicated EBS space.

Modular and Growing Coverage

Pilario currently supports four major personal care product categories: shampoo, hair treatment, body wash, and face moisturizer, with more modules in development. This modular approach ensures that as the EBS and regulatory landscape evolves, Pilario will continue to enable new categories and features for the beauty industry.
